Folkeuniversitetet is one of Norway’s oldest education institutions. Now part of Lingu, it offers language, vocational, digital and cultural courses across the country, online and on campus. Lingu asked us to refresh Folkeuniversitetet’s visual identity, evolve the logo, design a new website experience, and build a brand system the marketing team could actually use.

The Problem: Modern Expectations, legacy identity

Folkeuniversitetet had the reputation, the reach and the impact. What it did not have was a visual expression that matched how modern adult learning works today. After joining Lingu, the brand needed to feel digital, open and contemporary, while preserving its recognisable owl and colour palette.

The Challenge: Do Not Touch the Owl

The brief was clear and non-negotiable: the owl had to stay. It had been used across buildings, diplomas and materials for decades and was instantly recognisable. Our task was to adapt it into a modern identity system that works across digital platforms and communication.

What We Did

Visual identity redesign

We kept the owl and core colour palette, and built a new visual language around them that feels friendly, open, smart and accessible rather than institutional.

Logo evolution

We merged the historic owl symbol with a speech-bubble form inspired by Lingu, creating a logo that speaks to both education and conversation, past and present.

Custom brand typography

We developed a custom display font to support the visual identity. AI supported exploration. Final letterforms were refined and integrated into the brand system.

Website and platform UI

We applied the new identity to the website and platform, aligning layouts, components and interactions into one coherent experience.

Brand system and guidelines

We created a logo system, full identity, visual guidelines, mini brand book and header styles. This gave the team a practical toolkit for everyday use.

Identity character mascot

We introduced a character mascot, generated, refined and animated with AI, now used across digital ads and touchpoints, adding a human element to the brand.

Offline identity applications

We applied the identity to physical assets such as diplomas and office branding, ensuring consistency beyond digital.

How We Used AI (And How We Did Not)

AI supported early exploration, generating letterform directions and mascot concepts that we later refined by hand. It accelerated the process and expanded visual options. Final decisions — art direction, typography, UX/UI and the identity itself — were made by the team.

The Result

Folkeuniversitetet now looks like what it already is: a serious institution that is not stuck in the past. The new identity is more open, contemporary and visually distinct, without losing the recognisable owl or the trust built over 150 years. After launch, the in-house team used the system across campaigns and digital presence. Heritage stayed intact. Everything else moved forward.
